ABOUT THE CLUB
The Voice of America Amateur Radio Club (K3VOA) ham shack is located on the top floor of the Cohen Building, home of the Voice of America Headquarters, located at 330 Independence Avenue, SW, at the foot of Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
Membership is restricted to employees, retirees and former employees of the Voice of America (VOA), the International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB), the United States Information Agency (USIA), the United States Department of State (DOS) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Regular club meetings are held in the ham shack on the first Tuesday of every month at 11:45 a.m.
The K3VOA station consists of a Kenwood TS-440 HF transceiver and a Heathkit SB-200 linear amplifier feeding various antennas such as dipoles and a Cushcraft A3S beam on a 30-foot tower. K3VOA owns and operates two 'open' repeaters. The two-meter repeater output frequency is 147.045 MHz. The input frequency is offset +600 kHz at 147.645 MHz. The 3/4-meter repeater output frequency is 448.575 MHz. The input frequency is offset -5.00 MHZ at 443.575 MHz. Both repeaters are coordinated through T-MARC. These are "local area repeaters" and the coverage area is deliberately limited to about a 10 mile radius from the US Capitol Building. Most of the usage is by VOA members contacting each other locally, tourists who are on the Mall and want to keep in touch and emergency and public service stations who want primary or backup communications during special events (like the Marine Corps Marathon) or local emergencies (such as the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon.)
Our two meter Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) station is on 144.390 MHz and serves Washington, D.C. as an APRS-Relay station.

CONTESTS
Sometimes K3VOA participates in contests. There are also times when local area clubs, such as the Potomac Valley Radio Club (PVRC) or the Maryland Apple Dumplings Radio Amateur Society (MADRAS) use the K3VOA facilities during contests. And, occasionally, K3VOA wins. See below.
