Topic: The Civil Rights Movement
Guest: Jon Meacham, Managing Editor of Newsweek
Meacham’s book, Voices In Our Blood, is an anthology of what forty of the  nation’s best writers had to say about the Civil Rights Movement. We will discuss the civil rights movement from the days leading up to World War II until today.

Tuesday January 16
Topic: Religious Freedom Day
Guests:Carol Negus, Council for America’s First Freedom
               Congressman Frank Wolf, (R. VA)
The founders of the United States were deeply convinced that religious freedom and tolerance were essential to a free people and the wellspring of all other freedom. On January 16,1786 the Statue for Religious Freedom became a law and adopted as the First Amendment of the Constitution in 1791. We will discuss how this freedom is expressed today.

Wednesday January 17
Topic: Iraq, 10 years after Gulf War
Guests: Charles Duelfer, former deputy chrm UNSCOM
               Robert Lieber, professor, Georgetown Univ.
               Phyllis Bennis, fellow at Institute for Policy Studies
This week marks the 10th anniversary of the start of the Gulf War. The United States continues to spend billions of dollars to keep Hussein in check. Will the Bush administration continue the policy of sanctions? Our guests will discuss what steps America should take in its policy toward Iraq.

Thursday January 18
Topic: Results of U.S. Census
Guest: Kenneth Prewitt, director, U.S. Census Bureau
The recently complete U.S. census shows that 9.3% of the U.S. population is now foreign born. The new immigrants are catching up in areas of  education and are learning English at an accelerated pace compared to previous immigrations.  Dr. Prewitt will discuss these and other facts found in the Census.

Friday January 19
Topic: Inauguration / Transition of Power
Guests: Richard Shenkman, presidential historian
42 U.S. presidents have taken office peacefully among cheering crowds.  Will this inauguration follow the same pattern or will this one also prove to be an exception. Our guests will discuss past inaugurations as well as the preparations and precautions taken for this one.
