Putting you in touch with the world...

Week of April 1st - April 5th, 2002

Mon. Apr. 1
Topic: Bioethics
Guest: Dr. Leon R. Kass, chairman, President’s Council on Bioethics

Dr. Kass will discuss the meaning, as well as the importance of bioethics in this ever-changing world where technology offers us the ability to manipulate what we have always accepted as the natural order of life. Will what we accept as ‘normal’ change as we see the promise of longer, healthier lives? And just because we can do something, does that mean we should?

Tuesday, Apr. 2
Topic:    Mideast Crisis
Guests: Mark Perry, Washington Editor, Palestinian Report
Ariel Cohen, research fellow, Heritage Foundation

Our guests will look at the crisis Israel faces from both the Israeli and
Palestinian sides.

Wed. Apr. 3
Topic: The Conquest of Native America and the Australian Aborigine
Guest: John Terence Lambert, Ph.D.

Colonialism leaves its mark on both the indigenous peoples and on their conquerors. The difference is that the conquerors are free to walk away while the native peoples are left with their psyches that never go away. Dr. Lambert will discuss how colonization affected the culture of the American Indians and the Australian Aborigines and the commonality he has found in both cases.

Thr. Apr.4
Topic: Impact of Foreign Aid
Guests: John Hatch, founder of FINCA and creator of Village Banking
Dr. Joanne Carter, legislative director, RESULTS

Foreign aid given to poor people directly as loans for start up business has a direct and almost immediate positive effect on local communities. Our guests will discuss the different types of aid available and the results that have been achieved.

Fri. Apr. 5
Topic: Cross-Cultural Communications
Guests:  Prof. Gary Weaver, School of Int'l Service, American Univ.

Is what I say what you hear ? Does my yes mean yes to you or does it mean that
I'm still thinking about it but don't want to be impolite by saying no immediately ? What is accepted in one society is not always accepted in another. Our guests will discuss these and other problems we encounter when trying to communicate.
