Week of July  9th - July 13th 2001

Monday, July 9
Topic: Maritime Piracy
Guests: John Brandon, Asia Foundation
             TBA
Criminals on the high seas, pirates, are still claiming victims the old fashioned way by boarding vessels and robbing the passengers and crew, stealing cargo or taking the entire ship. No, it’s not a movie or stage play; but it is very much part of the reality of international trade and the cost of this piracy runs into the billions of dollars. Our guests will discuss the reasons for the rise and the ultimate effect it has on commerce.

Tuesday, July 10
Topic: Postpartum Depression
Guests: Paul Stavic, George Mason Law School
             TBA
Postpartum psychosis occurs with 1 or 2 new mothers in 1,000. Symptoms may include delusions, hallucinations, and thoughts of harming the child and in some cases even killing the child. Our guests will discuss the symptoms, treatments and the legal ramifications for those women who actually carry out the infanticide.

Wednesday, July 10
Topic: Honesty
Guest: Brad Blanton, PhD
If you are asked to tell the truth about what you have done, what you think, and what you feel, it may sound simple, but how many of us can do it?  If individuals find it difficult to tell the truth, then how can we expect governments to? We will discuss what it would take to be truthful and the impact it would have on the world.

Thursday, July 11
Topic: Milosevic on Trial
Guests: Feryal Gharahi, PhD, Lawyer
            TBA
As Slobodan Milosevic stood before the UN Tribunal in The Hague he proclaimed, “ I consider this tribunal a false tribunal, a false indictment.” We will examine how Milosevic earned the title “Butcher of the Balkans” and what the Tribunal will have to do to prove it.

Friday, July 12
Topic: Unknown Shore
Guest: Robert Ruby, Author
In his book author Robert Ruby takes his reader from London to the coast of West Africa and finally to the very north of the New World in search of the Northwest Passage. Ruby will discuss the history of the Inuit people and the early colonization efforts made by fortune seeking explorers.
