Vozrozhdeniye Island is located
in the Aral Sea. The name translates to “Rebirth” in English, which carries
a somewhat ominous meaning considering that this island was an open-air
testing site for Soviet biological weapons programs during the Cold War.
The idea that a large body of water could provide a natural barrier and
a degree of security for dangerous experiments was tried before during
World War 11 when Gruinard Island off the coast of Scotland was used as
a test site by the British. We will discuss both areas and how one was
saved and what will happen to the other.
